What happens after I report a claim to my insurance carrier?
The standard sequence at most carriers:
Day 0 to 3. The carrier acknowledges the claim, assigns a claim number, and assigns an adjuster. The adjuster will reach out to schedule an inspection or a recorded statement.
Day 3 to 14. The adjuster inspects the loss (in person, by photo, or by video) and gathers documentation. For property claims, an estimate is built using software like Xactimate. For auto, a repair shop or appraiser values the vehicle.
Day 7 to 30. The carrier issues a coverage decision. For straightforward losses with clear coverage, payment follows quickly. For losses with disputed cause, complex damage, or coverage questions, the carrier may request additional information or extend the timeline.
For complex or large losses, the timeline can run several months. For catastrophe events (hurricanes, hail storms affecting many homes), all timelines stretch because the carrier is processing thousands of claims at once.
Georgia-specific timelines. Under Georgia regulations, carriers must acknowledge a claim within 15 days of receiving written notice and affirm or deny coverage within 60 days. Payments due must follow within 10 days of written demand. These are regulatory floors — many claims move faster.
What to do if your claim stalls. Document all communication with dates. If you pass the 60-day mark without a coverage decision, contact your agent and consider filing a complaint with the Georgia Department of Insurance.
